Most coffee in the world and in the Czech Republic is very unsustainable. The main problems include:
THE CHANGING CLIMATE
As in the Czech Republic, the climate is changing in the countries where coffee comes from. The impact includes rising temperatures, droughts and changes in weather, which have a negative effect on sensitive coffee trees, for which it is harder and harder to maintain yields.
UNSTABLE REVENUES
Coffee is a commodity with its price set very low due to the structure of the world coffee trade - thanks to this, many farmers choose to no longer sustain their production and leave their farms or end up losing money in the long run. Small farms are then replaced by huge plantations, often with unsustainable practices and poor working conditions
ENVIRONMENTAL COSTS
Low yields on traditional domestic farms and growing demand for coffee are leading to a shift to more cost-effective coffee growing, coupled with the expansion of plantations to forest areas. This method of cultivation often also leads to use of large amounts of unsuitable fertilizers and pesticides, which end up not only in coffee beans, but also in soil or rivers.
WHY DO WE DO IT?
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?
HELP FARMERS INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH INNOVATION AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES
PROMOTE GOOD WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENSURE A STABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR FARMERS
SUPPORT THE PURCHASE OF SUSTAINABLE COFFEE AND STABILIZE DEMAND AT FAIR PRICE
INVEST IN RESEARCH AND CONTROL OF CHANGES AFFECTING COFFEE AND FARMER GROWTH
We are part of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge.
SCC is a collective effort of companies, governments, non-profit organizations, research institutions and others to make the coffee sector a fully sustainable industry. Together with other organizations, we work to increase transparency and set a common vision for achieving sustainability. In practice, this means that we regularly participate in debates, seminars and conversations with other members and address the issues of setting a sustainable future for coffee.
The goals of the organization include:
- Assurance that coffee will help increase the income of 25 million farmers, workers and families in coffee.
- Implement sustainable practices that will help triple productivity on the current 10 million hectares of land where coffee is grown, so that even future growing demand is covered in an environmentally and socially beneficial way
- Prevent further deforestation of protected forest areas and destruction of other natural resources for coffee growing.
HOW DO WE CONTRIBUTE TO THE CHANGE?
WE SPREAD AWARENESS OF CONDITIONS IN THE COFFEE INDUSTRY AND SUSTAINABLE COFFEE
WE BUY TRANSPARENTLY AND FROM COOPERATIVES THAT HELP FARMERS
UNLIKE THE LARGE NUMBER OF THE LARGEST BRANDS, WE KNOW WHAT OUR COFFEE COMES FROM. COOPERATIVES FROM WHICH WE BUY HELP FARMERS INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AND SUSTAINABILITY OF PRODUCTION. THE CERTIFICATIONS, FINANCIAL RESOURCES AND ADMINISTRATION ASSOCIATED WITH WESTERN SALES ALSO HELP THEM.
THE NON-TRANSPARENCY OF SUPPLY NETWORKS ENABLES INHUMAN AND DANGEROUS WORKING CONDITIONS ON LARGE-SCALE ABUSE OF HUMAN PROTECTION AND LACK OF ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS. A RANGE OF SUCH COFFEE MAY CONTAIN HAZARDOUS PESTICIDE CHEMICALS AND OFTEN LEADS TO UNCONTROLLED DEFORESTATION IN THE SAKE OF EXPANSION
WE BUY AND PACK ECOLOGICALLY
SUSTAINABLE COFFEE HAS SEVERAL SEVERAL ADVANTAGES. IN TIMES OF CRISIS, IT OFFERS A LUCRATIVE PRODUCT THAT CAN BE SOLD AT A MORE STABLE PRICE; COFFEE PRODUCTION IS SUSTAINABLE AND REQUIRES CARE OF SOIL AND SURROUNDINGS OF COFFEE PLANTS THAT TRADITIONALLY THRIVE SIDE BY SIDE OF OTHER PLANTS; AS IT REQUIRES MORE EFFORD TO GROW IT, IT SUPPORTS DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES FROM WHICH FARMERS RECEIVE HELP WITH THE HARVEST
WE SHOP FAIR
THE PRICE OF COFFEE IN THE WORLD IS DETERMINED BY MARKET MECHANISMS WHICH CURRENTLY NEGATIVELY AFFECT UP TO 25 MILLION GROWERS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE. WHILE COSTS OF PRODUCTION OF 1 COFFE POUND ARE AROUND 1 AMERICAN DOLLAR, PURCHASE PRICES ARE CURRENTLY LOW OVER 1 DOLLAR AND FLUCTUATE. DURING 2019, THEY CAME CLOSE TO 90 CENTS, UNDER THE COST OF PRODUCTION. PURCHASING COFFEE BEANS WITH TRANSPARENT ORIGIN AND FOR REASONABLE PRICE, EITHER DIRECTLY OR THOUGH CERTIFICATION ASSURES FARMERS ARE PAID FAIRLY AND CAN MAINTAIN THEIR FARMING.
WITH INSUFFICIENT REGULATION IN COFFEE GROWTH, THE ROLE OF CONSUMERS IS VERY IMPORTANT. EVERYONE SHOULD BE AWARE OF WHAT PROBLEMS ARE RELATED TO COFFEE AND DO OUR BEST NOT TO SUPPORT BAD PRACTICES. IT IS IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE COFFEE YOU BUY IS FROM TRANSPARENT SOURCES AND SUSTAINABLE. IF ITS QUALITY AND ETHICAL ORIGIN IS NOT GUARANTEED BY THE MANUFACTURER, IT SHOULD BE CERTIFIED. THE MOST FAMOUS ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONS INCLUDE EU BIO, RAINFOREST ALLIANCE, UTZ or BIRD FRIENDLY. WITH THE STRONGER FOCUS ON SOCIAL ASPECTS ITS FAIR TRADE, AGAIN UTZ AND RAINFOREST ALLIANCE, AND IN ADDITION 4C
